01 / The project
An independent, community-made VR mod for Alan Wake on PC.
This mod brings the original Alan Wake to life in your VR headset. The mod features 6dof headset tracking and synced stereo rendering for a smooth and artifact-free VR experience. Gameplay remains unchanged in this first release - the game is still a 3rd person experience and best experienced seated with a gamepad (or alternatively keyboard and mouse). A first person mode with motion controls might come in a later update.

03 / Getting started
You need either the gog.com, Steam or Epic Games version. Other game versions will not work. Alan Wake Remastered is not supported.
Download the mod installer above, run it and point it to your Alan Wake game folder.
Connect your VR headset to your PC. Make sure you have set the correct active OpenXR runtime. Note: Meta Horizon Link is currently not working; Quest owners must use either Steam Link or Virtual Desktop.
Simply start the game normally through your store launcher, or start the AlanWake.exe from the game folder. The game should boot straight into VR.
04 / Field notes
Good to know before you go.
You need the original Alan Wake from either gog.com ↗, Steam ↗ or Epic ↗. I primarily develop the mod against the gog version, but the other two should work as well. Other game versions are not supported.
Alan Wake Remastered is not supported. American Nightmare might become supported in the future.
Any headset with a 32bit OpenXR runtime should work. This includes all SteamVR headsets and Meta Quest. Note: the Meta Link 32bit runtime appears to be broken right now, so Quest owners need to use Steam Link or Virtual Desktop.
For the time being, I have not made any changes to the gameplay itself. So the game remains a 3rd person experience that you play preferably with a gamepad or with keyboard+mouse. A first person mode with motion controls might come in the future.
Thankfully, Alan Wake is not Crysis - but the mod is still fairly taxing due to its lighting and effect heaviness. If you are struggling with performance, the single most impactful change for both CPU and GPU is to turn "Shadows" to "Low".
To update the mod, just download the latest installer and run it again. If you'd like to uninstall the mod, just run Uninstall_AlanWakeVR.exe in the game folder. Alternatively, you can just delete the d3d9.dll.
